The brief for Kagayaki arrived with a built-in constraint that became its design logic: everything in the room must serve the chef, not itself. As the Singapore outpost of Tokyo's first Michelin-starred chef-owned teppanyaki restaurant, the 18-seater occupies 123 sqm of a Keong Saik shophouse — a footprint that demanded choreography over decoration.
A subdued entrance corridor compresses the guest before the dining hall opens into warmth and light, the teppan counters at its centre. The backdrop is a handcrafted Sakura Kumiko screen by Tanihata artisans from Toyama — assembled without a single nail, its geometry tightening the attention on what unfolds in front of it.
The room does not perform. The chef does.
