Napier Residence is a carefully considered transformation that reimagines a decade-old condominium into a home tailored for contemporary family life.

Designed for a young family of four, the brief called for generous storage, seamless entertaining spaces, and the flexibility to accommodate working from home — all without compromising visual clarity. Rather than layering additions onto the existing shell, we approached the project strategically, beginning with what was worth preserving. The apartment’s travertine floors and walls offered strong architectural “bones”, grounding the redesign in warmth and permanence.

The intervention focused on spatial recalibration. Former wet and dry kitchens were demolished and reorganised into a more efficient galley configuration, liberating space for a dining corner anchored by a curved banquette. This sculpted insertion softens the orthogonal plan while maximising seating within a compact footprint. Mirrored surfaces extend sightlines and light, enhancing the sense of openness.

Throughout the communal areas, storage is not treated as an afterthought but as an architectural element. Full-height cabinetry in figured ash veneer lines the entry sequence, its grain patterns carefully composed to create rhythm and depth. Rather than reading as cupboards, these volumes form a sculptural backdrop — integrating display niches, concealed compartments, and a discreet work ledge overlooking the balcony greenery. Function is embedded, yet visually restrained.

A fluted glass pocket door mediates between front- and back-of-house, enabling flexibility and cross-ventilation. Every adjustment, from concealed laundry solutions to reconfigured thresholds, contributes to a home that feels effortless despite its high performance.

In the master suite, material transitions were refined to cultivate restfulness. Quartersawn oak introduces linear calm, replacing more expressive grain patterns. The walk-in wardrobe and bathroom were reconfigured to enhance flow and storage capacity, while high-gloss lacquer panels subtly amplify light within the dressing area. The result is a home that feels composed and effortless — a quiet recalibration where permanence and contemporary living exist in balance.
